What can you expect from your first j项 at Carthage? 新朋友, 身临其境的学习, 和 a month you won’t forget — whether you stay on campus, or get a head start touring the world.

All first-year students are required to take a j项 course their first year at Carthage. Most first-year students stay on campus for their first j项, but freshmen can participate in a j项 study tour if spots are available.

Introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

How did you spend your first j项?
“I spent my first j项 taking a Jiu-jitsu course on campus! I was already on campus for my athletic season 和 was excited to try a new martial art.”

What did you learn from the experience?
“The course covered basic jiu-jitsu movements, striking, 和 self-defense tactics. One thing I learned that stuck out to me was the different positions in jiu-jitsu 和 how different it was from wrestling. It was a new experience to try, especially since my base in wrestling could be applied here. The self-defense tactics we learned ranged from disarming someone to how to fight against being grabbed 和/or choked. I would recommend this course to anyone on campus!”

What do you hope to do in a future j项?
“在未来的j项, I would love to take an art or political science-related class! Not only does it fit with my major, I love learning about these topics 和 want to broaden my knowledge.”

Healthcare in 印度: Traditional 和 Non-Traditional Healing

How did you spend your first j项?
“I spent my first j项 on a study abroad trip to 印度. We went to visit important historical sites — including one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal — volunteer in the communities, 和 interact with the local people we met.”

What did you learn from the experience?:
“I got to experience a new culture, 尝试新食物, 和 learn about different perspectives on religion, 灵性, 医疗保健, 以及整个社会. It was such an eye opening experience to the world around us.”

What do you hope to do in a future j项?:
“在未来的j项, I hope to take a trip to Africa 和 learn more life-changing perspectives so that I can experience parts of my own history on a deeper, 更个人化.”

“I spent my first j项 learning how to use Premier Pro, which is a video editing software. I loved being able to learn how to make 和 edit my video with this class.”

What did you learn from the experience?:
“I learned how to edit 和 make my own videos.”

What do you hope to do in a future j项?:
“Travel somewhere out of state with friends.”

Biodiversity, Brains, 和 Behavior in 洪都拉斯

How did you spend your first j项?
“For my first j项, I was able to go to 洪都拉斯. In 洪都拉斯, I went scuba diving 和 got scuba diving certified. Some of the dives that I did included diving with sharks, 观赏斑鹰鳐, 还有那么多美丽的珊瑚. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

What did you learn from the experience?
“I learned about all the different sea creatures in the Caribbean, 那里的人是怎样生活的, 以及玛雅遗址.”

“I hope for one of the future j项s I can go to Greece, or if they were to add an Italy one, I would gladly go on that trip.”

“My first j项 was amazing! I had a lot of fun in the class 和 I learned so much! 教授. Renaud was a really good professor who made the class really interesting.”

What did you learn from the experience?:
“I learned a lot about Cleopatra 和 Hypatia, but I also learned that j项s are not as stressful as I thought they would be.”

What do you hope to do in a future j项?:
“I am hoping that in the future I can travel to a different country 和 learn things that aren’t necessarily available in the United States.”

“I spent my first j项 working hard in the classroom 和 spending lots of quality time with my friends on campus.”

What did you learn from the experience?:
“During my first j项 experience, I learned the importance of giving yourself time to decompress. I also learned how hectic our lives all are, even though we may not realize it during our everyday routines.”

What do you hope to do in a future j项?:
“I hope to take a j项 study abroad trip in the future. I also hope to spend more time trying new things, especially because j项 is the perfect opportunity to do so.”
